Our story

From one back-garden pond
to a full pond practice.

Pure Ponds started where most good things in Suffolk start — out the back, with a spade and a problem to solve. What began as a personal obsession with water gardens turned, over the seasons, into a small specialist practice for the people who wanted theirs done properly.

Pure Ponds began as a one-man job and stayed close to that idea — David spent years rebuilding and rescuing ponds for friends, neighbours and word-of-mouth referrals before turning the work into a registered company in 2024.

Same pair of hands, same standards — just a clearer name on the van. The practice has grown a little since: a small team of pond builders, a regular maintenance round across two counties, and an accreditation as an approved Oase installer for Water Therapy. We've stayed deliberately compact. Every job is quoted by David, walked by David, and signed off by David — and the same is true of every restoration that comes through.

That's the bit that hasn't changed. A pond is a slow garden. It rewards the people who took the time to build it well — the right liner, the right shelves, the right plants in the right corners — and it punishes shortcuts in ways that show up two summers later. So we don't take them. We do fewer jobs a year than a bigger outfit, and we stay around to look after the work after it's finished.

How we work

Four things we
won't compromise on.

Most of what makes a pond work isn't visible from the patio. It's in the choices made at the start — the shelves, the substrates, the filtration spec, the way the cables route — and in being honest with the client when the answer is "no, that won't last." These are the rules we run the practice by.

Walk the garden first.

Every project starts with a site visit. We look at the light, the run-off, the trees you've got, and the trees that'll be there in ten years. No deposit is taken before we've stood in the garden and properly understood what you want from the water.

Build it for thirty years.

EPDM liners, properly-bedded shelves, oversize filtration, accessible pump chambers. Everything is built so it can be serviced and topped-up without ever cutting into the pond. The pond you have in year fifteen should be the pond you signed off in year one.

Respect the wildlife.

We work in waders, by hand. Fish are netted into oxygenated holding tanks. Frogs, newts and dragonfly larvae are accounted for. When a pond's gone wrong, the problem is usually chemistry — not the wildlife. We restore the water around them, not in spite of them.

Stay after the build.

A new pond takes two summers to settle. We come back to balance it, plant it, and answer the late-evening texts about cloudy water in week three. Most of our maintenance round started as a build — and that's exactly how we want it to keep working.

David has been building and restoring garden ponds across East Anglia for over a decade. He started as a landscape gardener with a soft spot for water, picked up enough fish-keeping to know what a stressed koi looks like, and trained as an approved Oase installer to round out the water-chemistry side of the work.

He's the one you'll ring. He's the one who turns up to the site visit. He's the one who writes the quote, and he's the one who'll be standing in your pond on day one of the build — boots, waders, and a level. Where we work

Two counties,
one workshop.

We work from a workshop in Bungay, Suffolk — a small market town just inside the Norfolk border — and travel out from there. Most weeks the van covers Beccles, Halesworth, Southwold and Norwich, with regular jobs as far as the coast and into mid-Suffolk. If your garden's on the map, we'd be pleased to come and see it.

Most weeks we're between four or five gardens — a mix of maintenance rounds and one or two larger builds in their middle weeks. We hold a few maintenance slots aside for the older clients we've had longest, and book new builds three to four months out.

If you're outside the radius and you've heard good things, ring us anyway. We do occasionally take a build a little further afield when the project's the right one.
